How to Choose the Right Cock Ring Size
Cock rings are available in a variety of colours, designs and materials, including solid steel rings. If you’re considering a fixed-diameter cock ring, read on. You’ll learn how to choose the right size and how to put it on.
A cock ring can help maintain an erection by restricting blood flow out of the penis. Some models fit around the base of the penis only, others go around both the penis and scrotum, and some have two or more separate openings. Before choosing a size, make sure you understand how your chosen model is worn.
Metal cock rings have a fixed diameter, so choosing the right size is particularly important. A ring that is too loose may not provide the desired effect, while one that is too tight can cause pain, swelling and difficulty with removal.
Preparation: What to Consider Before Choosing and Putting on a Ring
1. Size and Position
Measure the circumference where the ring will actually sit. For a ring worn around the penis only, use a flexible measuring tape to measure the circumference at the base while erect. Place the tape against the skin without pulling it tight. You can also use a piece of non-stretch string and then measure the marked length with a ruler.
For a ring worn around both the penis and scrotum, measure around both at the intended wearing position and follow the manufacturer's recommended measuring method. The circumference of the penis alone is not sufficient for this type of ring.
If the manufacturer specifies the internal diameter, you can convert your circumference measurement to an approximate diameter:
Internal diameter = circumference ÷ 3.14
For example, a circumference of 15 cm corresponds to a diameter of approximately 4.8 cm, or 48 mm. However, this is simply a conversion of the circumference, not an automatic recommendation for a particular ring size. Also consider the ring's width and design, along with the manufacturer's sizing guidance.
The ring should fit snugly without causing pain or numbness. Being able to put it on while flaccid or slide a finger underneath it does not guarantee a comfortable fit during an erection. Do not choose a smaller diameter simply for a tighter squeeze.
2. Lubricant
Silicone lubricant or water-based lubricant makes it easier to put on and remove a metal ring. Use a small amount so the ring does not become too slippery to handle.
3. Body hair
Shaving is not necessary, but trimming or shaving your pubic hair can make handling easier. When putting the ring on, make sure no hair gets caught underneath it or in its fastening.
A Closed Ring or a Magnetic Fastening?
A conventional closed metal ring cannot be opened. However, there are also fixed-diameter rings with a magnetic fastening and a detachable section. This makes putting the ring on and taking it off easier, which can be useful when trying a metal cock ring for the first time. Being able to open the ring does not replace the need to choose the right size.
Before use, practise opening the fastening. Join the sections slowly and keep skin and hair clear so they do not get pinched in the magnetic joint. Always follow the instructions for your particular model.
How to Put On a Cock Ring
The following instructions apply to closed rings without a fastening. Put them on while flaccid, using a little lubricant, and take your time. If anything is difficult or painful, stop and do not force it through.
Around the Penis and Scrotum
Step 1: Lift your flaccid penis and carefully pass one testicle through the ring.
Step 2: Gently pass the second testicle through and adjust the scrotum so the ring does not pinch the skin.
Step 3: Then pass your flaccid penis through and move the ring towards your body. Check that it is not pulling on any skin or hair.
At the Base of the Penis
Pass your flaccid penis through the ring and carefully slide it down to the base. The scrotum remains outside the ring.
For a magnetic model, use the detachable section and put it on according to the manufacturer's instructions. With any model, pay attention to how tight it feels as your erection develops; remove the ring immediately if you experience any uncomfortable symptoms.
How to Remove the Ring
A closed ring is usually easier to remove once your penis is flaccid and with a little lubricant. For models worn around both the penis and scrotum, first take your flaccid penis out, then gently pass the testicles back through, one at a time.
If you cannot remove the ring, particularly if there is swelling, pain, numbness or discolouration, seek medical help immediately. Do not wait several hours to see whether the problem resolves, and do not attempt to cut the ring or remove it with tools at home.
Tips for Safe Use
How long can I keep the ring on?
Do not leave a cock ring on for longer than 30 minutes, or follow a shorter time limit if specified by the manufacturer. Keep your first session brief. If you experience pain, numbness, coldness, significant swelling or unusual discolouration, remove it immediately. Never fall asleep wearing a ring, and do not assume that briefly removing it makes it safe to start another half-hour session. The same rules apply to magnetic models.
Can I use the ring with a condom?
Yes. Put the ring on first, then put on a condom once you have an erection. Take care not to snag or damage the condom while handling the ring, and use a condom-compatible lubricant.
What about erection medication?
If you take medication for erections, consult your doctor before using a rigid constriction ring. A persistent erection or swelling can make removal more difficult, particularly with a closed model. Guidance for medical vacuum erection devices with specialised rings cannot automatically be applied to an ordinary metal cock ring.
